Wine has always been featured in my life through various scenes from family to religion. My family, like many others, frequently enjoys a bottle of wine over dinner and as a child would sometimes allow me to sample some. My initial reaction to it was, "why in the world would someone voluntary drink this it tastes like rotten metal." This did not shock me as a child as I always looked at alcoholic beverages as adult and were supposed to be unappealing to kids. However, as I got older and grew a fonder appreciation for alcohol I started to realize how much there was to wine. I began to explore different types from sweet to dry, red to white, and still to sparkling. I am still very new to wine and have a lot to learn when it comes to tasting and talking about it.
When initially starting my journey I enjoyed the sweeter wines as they were easy to drink. As I started to refine my taste I found the drier red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir to taste the best. The taste to me is smooth and warming and does not leave me with a headache like some of the sweeter wines did. The hardest wine for me to drink would be white wines. I have tried many times to try and like them, but there's something to them that makes me wince. I hope through this course I can grow my palate and find a white that I will love.
I am very excited for this course and to learn all of the aspects of wine. One of the topics I'm eager to learn about is how wine is really made and how these processes influence the taste of the wine. The structure of the class also excites me as we are encouraged to go out and drink with friends and discover wine together!
